Today is the birthday of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). And it’s also the perfect time of year for the more than half-hour opening movement of his 3rd Symphony, which he described in his early writings as the arrival of spring and the triumphant entry of the summer. Being such a long and self-contained statement, we will present the first movement of Mahler’s 3rd as today’s noon masterpiece at 2:00 p.m.
