African music superstar Oluwatosin Ajibade, better known as Mr. Eazi, invites viewers into his creative process with “The Legalize Art Experience”, a new short film documenting his collaboration with Beninese painter Patricorel.
The mini-doc, directed by Demola Falomo, captures Eazi’s first time performing “Legalize,” the lead single from his upcoming debut album, as Patricorel creates the single’s artwork on location for an intimate audience. The visuals were filmed at an invitation-only event in May at a disused hotel in Lekki, Lagos – Nigeria.
Inspired by his growing interest in acquiring and disseminating African art, Mr. Eazi views his as-yet-untitled debut album as a collection of works of art. Each single from the album will be represented as a series of uniquely commissioned pieces from different African visual artists. These coins will be tokenized and shared with the public through metaverses and specially curated physical events.
For “Legalize,” Mr. Eazi called on Patricorel, whose work was introduced to him while recording the album in Cotonou, Benin. While the song sees Eazi displaying his emotions as he celebrates his love for fiancee Temi Otedola, Patricorel’s painting of the same name simultaneously captures the intimacy of love, submission, vulnerability and the finality of death. .
“I see the instrumental as a canvas…. just like Patricorel… It’s an ordinary canvas and you don’t know what you’re going to create,” says Eazi. “What struck me was that he represents love with his pieces, but he draws with skeletons. I think skeletons are our most human naked form.
The song “Legalize” and its official music video were released on Friday.
